I am going to (or going to try to) link up 2 computers to share files and play games etc. I have a serial link but it's far too slow. What type of network cards and cables do you recommend I use. I'm a complete beginner as far as networking goes.

I'm no expert on networks either but I have connected a couple of computers with 2 D-Link 530CT+ PCI net cards.
I don't know about other cards, but I didn't have any problems with D-Link.
I would go for a BNC connector with a couple of T's and a couple of Terminators. (You need a hub if using RJ45 if I'm correct)
There is a small bit of info on my page... www.minton7.freeserve.co.uk http://www.hardwarecentral.com/discussion/smile.gif

If you are using Rj45 cable, you could use a cross-over cable to directly connect 2 machines.

You don't say how far or through what parts of the house you're planning to run the cables for this network. If you're going any length you can run 10BaseT up to 100 meters (Cat5, RJ45) and 10Base2 (thicknet)up to 200 meters (coax cable)The Cat5 needs a hub but is easier to install and works better. The 10Base2 needs terminators on each end plus BNC connectors. I recently installed a D-Link DE-906 10BaseT kit and it was all pretty straight forward. It up to you.

...the quickest and easiest way is to get two PCI 100BASE-TX fastEthernet NICs and connect them with a cross-over UTP/RJ45 catagory5 cable - no need for a hub. http://www.hardwarecentral.com/discussion/smile.gif
