I'm in the process of setting up a network to share an ADSL connection that uses PPoE. I decided to purchase the linksys dsl router to do double duty, including firewall. My thoughts are:
1. There will only be a handful of machines on the network (6-8), so would static IP's work better than DHCP?
2. How does the router "dial-up" using PPoE, ie does each individual machine have to connect using PPoE or can they use the static address and have the router deal with connection issues?
Any thoughts or experiences with the above would help tremendously.

You don't have to install a PPPoE client on every client. I have an old Pent 100 with 32mb or ram. I installed nt on it and PPPoE. Then i installed a proxy server(Winroute). All computers on internal network have static ip's (192.168.1.1-10). My server pc has two nic's in it. One for the dsl modem, second for the internal network

Here's what I did:
My systems: 1 win98 machine
1 win98 / Linux machine
Pacbell dsl with pppoe (single IP purchased).

I bought the Linksys befsr41 dsl router/gateway/hub with pppoe support.
All I had to do was remove the crappy pppoe software from my main machine (installed by pacbell), hook up the router between the dsl modem and the two PC's, open a browser window on either machine and browse to the router's IP (192.168.1.1). Fill out some basic info (your logonID and password for your ISP, enable pppoe, etc), and in 5 minutes I was online on BOTH machines without noticeable speed loss.
This is the BEST 158 bucks I ever spent.
This is also a hub with a downstream expansion for up to 253 PC's.
Also: because the router takes care of the pppoe, I never get bumped off, nor do I have to log on ever again. With straight connection to the dsl modem, I had to log in every 6 hours....

pvanosta, how did you prevent from getting bumped off every 6 hrs using your router? Any special settings/software?
Thanks!
