Hello, I have a home network of two computers with win 98 SE. 5 port hub, 10baseT Lynksys <sp> cards and just got dsl. I went with a USB dsl modem thinking I dont have to worry about having 2 network cards in the computer the dsl will be installed on and the usb modem shouldnt interfer with My network since its not using a network card.. or so I thought. Well I follow the directions and adding whats needing under networks and all and get the dsl installed and working but now I cant transfer files from one computer to the other... will say device no longer available when I do. Only way I can send files between the 2 computers is if i'm off the internet and the usb modem is unplugged, and even then sometimes it screws up, will send files fine for awhile and then give me the same error of device or resource no longer available. Can anyone help tell me how to fix this? I first thought of maybe theres an irq conflict so i look, and for somereason the usb dsl modem attaches itself to the same irq as the network card. I cant change them, have tried. Everytime the computer boots nomatter what I do it wants to put my network card and dsl usb modem on same irq. When I uninstall the usb dsl modem and reboot.. it puts the network card on a different irq then before when it was sharing with the usb modem. Strange.. any ideas?

I can't figure out your setup. Please list your setup again.
This is how it needs to be inorder to work:
Nic in each comp
Hub
and the DSL modem needs to plug into the hub.

whats NIC? is that a network card? The way its set up is two computers, network card in each and they are connected to a standard 5 port hub. I cant connect the dsl modem to the hub, or do not know how. the dsl modem is a usb modem, it connects to the usb port to the computer I use the most. Need more information then this? if so let me know what information you need... I'd very much appreciate if a solution is found.

please Re-post stating problem clearly and we'll be glad to help. Yes, NIC is Network Card.

Ok, I'll try to explain this as clearly as possible. I have two computers at home on a network. one computer is a celeron 400, the other which is the main computer that I use is a PIII 600. the two are network together by a normal 5 port Linksys hub and both have a single ethernet network card. basically the celeron system is used for my back up, I transfer My files over to it when I need to reformat My PIII 600 machine. And I use the celeron system to burn backup cd's also. The problem is after I got dsl.. I got a dsl USB modem which just connects to the USB port on My PIII 600.. after I got dsl and followed instructions exactly to install it... now when I am on the internet and dsl modem is active and pluged in I can nolonger use My network to transfer files to My celeron system. It gives me a that source or resource is nolonger available. When I disconnect My usb Modem it will let me transfer files but only for certain periods of time and then it'll do the samething and tell me that error. Is this enough to see the problem or is more specifics needed? thanks

Hmm...still a little unclear. Wait..Is the DSL modem connected to your computer via USB alone? Or USB AND Ethernet? Cause I have never used a USB modem b4.

Hej Boomy ... i dunno if I can help but..
I have DSL ... but it connects to a NIC not USB ... anyways... i had the same problem with network. here's what i did:
In network Properties add a new Protocol, i use IPX/SPX ( i dunno why but..)
now you will have 2 protocols per device (in theory) TCP/IP for the DSL adapter and IPX for file transfer .. make sure that your DSL apater is NOT binded to the IPX (go to proerties of the adapter, under the tab "Bindings" unselect IPX) and your NIC is NOT binded to TCP/IP (unless you are sharing the inet connection with the other comp)
also make sure that the second comp has IPX/SPX protocol installed.
It should work now...I know I'm bad at explaining things but... http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/smile.gif http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/smile.gif
hope it helped !

I appreciate your input greatly, so far it appears to be working, I'm on the internet and files are transfering over the network now... no errors as of yet.. thank you.. will let you know if any errors or anything happens. One question tho, you said to not have TCP/IP bind to the NIC unless I was doing internet sharing.. does that basically mean I cant do internet sharing and expect to be able to transfer files over the network at the sametime? or? Thanks again... wooo hooo

No problem Boomy http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/smile.gif
as to the TCP/IP ques.
i'm not sure.. I have to have TCP/IP binded couse i'm connecting through NIC's ... but on TCP/IP alone the network doesn't seem to work..that's why i added the IPX, however it is causing me some problems...sometimes while transfering larger files through LAN, the DSL connection drops. I still didnt figure out why...but i'm working on it http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/smile.gif
It shouldnot be a problem for you dough http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/smile.gif
enjoy !

Well I wished thats all the problem I had was dsl dropping when i tried transfered files. before I fixed the binding it cause my computer to lock up totally. it seems to be working now tho. but while transfering a big file yesterday... my computer locked...that might be tho just because my computer needs reformating, which i'm doing today... so will let you know. Does your dsl use WinPoET?

weird...mine doesnt lock up http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/frown.gif
try un-biding (if you didnt already) TCP/IP from the network..
and i'm using Access Manager to connect to DSL.. it's a really crappy prog that came from my provider ( sympatico )... is that winpoet any good ? http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/smile.gif
..after a week of (unsuccessful) trying to connect my Linux box to dsl through PPPoE i dont feel like doing the same in Windows..so i'll stick to Access Manager http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/smile.gif
anyways..let me know if the locking-up continues...maybe we'll figure something out http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/smile.gif

cool, i'm backing up stuff now to reformat... WinPoET is a PPPoE program.. you can read about it at www.wingate.com (http://www.wingate.com) under ivasion under software or products. From what I read I need this for my dsl to work. In the documentation of WinPoET it says it uses a NIC.. which I dont understand because My dsl modem is usb, shouldnt need a NIC at all.. i'm wondering if this is part of the reason for my network actin like it did.. along with bindings.
