This is a gray area for me, lol. I want to network my two PC's together but would like to know what the best budget setup would be ?

Depends if you will ever be connecting them to a third device ( other pc, cable modem...)

the easiest way to connect 2 computers is via a cross-over cable. they go for about $5 - $10. add some cheap nic's - ISA 10baseT will work fine - $10 used.

once the hardware is set up, windows networking is fairly easy. either use tcp/ip or netbeui as a protocol. tcp/ip requires that each nic has a unique ip address. Use 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

you can now share files and printers between the two computers.

Hope that's budget enough for you http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/smile.gif

I myself am very picky when it comes to hardware and well now adays stuff is getting better and better. I decided to order myself a realtek based card, called asound. Well they are 6 bucks NEW NOT USED. They are 10/100 so you don't overpay for 10baset isa. These are pci, and not cheap crap. GO to www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com) or go here http://www.cardinal-computer.com/networking.html and select the one that says.

Asound Network Card 10/100 RJ45 PCI Ethernet Adapter Fast Netcard

Regular price: $17.95
Sale price: $6.00

This a excellent deal, ground brought me to 15 total, but come on thats good! I use those cards and well I have 3, and they are flawless. They install with super ease and they are actually small cards too. Crossover cable you can get for cheap as bartelby said. Or say you want to add a 3rd computer later, get yourself a 4 port hub, but these are around 30 bucks. But networking is very fun, and if ya need help ill help ya http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/smile.gif.
