I just got DSL level 4 from ameritech which is basically 1500k download and 256k upload.
When Ameritech came they installed a 4 port router which I was going to install into a 24 port hub and just plug my computers into the 24 port hub. The router cames with a firewall and I dont trust it completely. Not only that but I am experiencing several strange activities on my computer and want to make completely sure that no one is hacking into my computer. In other words I want to put atleast 3 different firewalls between the incoming dsl level 4 and any computer i would happen to plug into my 24 port router. I would suggest that I setup a Linux box and maybe a novel box and maybe even a 2000 box. What ever is easiest. I can install linux but cannot figure out how to route a network connection through it to a windows machine. Im not saying that the sky is the limit but I want to be extremely secure. What are your suggestions? what would be the best and what would be good for using old 486 and pentium machines? Are there any downfalls to using a slower machine strictly as a gateway for extra security?

All you have to do is make sure the routed daemon is running and create a static route using the route add command from one NIC to another which the 2000 box is running to... and natd if your running NAT...
