I've had the problem for months and I can live with it but it's beginning to get on my nerves.
For any reason, there was a "last drive=G" command in the config.sys of a floppy I used to install this system in Win98. I realized far later that the command must have somehow been copied to Windows as my drives keep disapearing when I play with partitions. For Instance if I have 4 visible partitions on my HDDs, I have my burner disapearing from Explorer (but Nero doesn't bother and still can use it). Then if I add a 5th partition, both my DVD and my Burner are gone. I only have C,D,E,F and G. I have searched a few config files but I can't find where this is located. Does anyone have a clue ? Hiding partitions make my drives reappear.

Insert a lastdrive=z in the c:\config.sys file, it should solve your problem. Or get tweakui, you'll be able to select which drive lettre are allowed to appear in Explorer.

You can get tweakui from http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp

FYI-> Way back in the Good Old DOS Days, the lastdrive paramater was a good thing. Each drive letter took up a tiny bit of convenional mem. And getting every little bit of mem back them was critical....

Its sorta sad, when I was 4 and using windows 3.1 on my 486. I never had a system crash, then after awhile I get my next computer, a pentium 2, and it was on ME..That was some of the worst days of me and computers, I swear Microsoft programmed that OS to crash. Then comes Windows 2000 that still hates me but doesnt always crash :D
