Have an Inspiron 531s with a small scsi hard drive. Is it possible to take it out and replace it with an ATA hard drive? Will I run into a lot of problems switching it over?

since when does Dell put SCSI drives in mainstream systems? I think you mean SATA.

My mistake. The drive is SATA 3.5 7.2 and I can just add another SATA drive. I was told by Dell that the power cable is split, so I would only need a data cable which I could get when I purchase the drive. I assume the cable is generic and NewEgg or any vender would have it. The drive in it now is only 80gig. How would it impact the Vista operating system on the present drive?

if you need the cable, make sure to buy a retail box hard drive, not OEM. OEM would be the drive only.

adding a new drive wouldn't affect the OS.

I know you're talking their Optiplex and Dimension lines mostly, but Dell's Precision Workstations are also fairly mainstream.

Mine comes with 10K RPM SAS drives in a two disk stripe. Extremely fast and a major workhorse. Just in case anyone was wondering :)

I wouldn't consider Precision workstations as mainstream. What percentage of households have them? They are common for work environments, not the home market.

I think we're splitting hairs here. Something that is regularly seen throughout an industry is generally considered mainstream. I was considering far more than just home users in my point.

Again, splitting hairs.
