I am looking to buy a new hard drive i narrowed it down to two drives the:
WD expert eide ultra ATA/66 which has a 9ms seek, 7200 rpm, 18gigs, 2mb buffer, and 8 heads 4 platters. PRICE: $227.00
And
IBM IBM Deskstar 22GXP 22.6GB EIDE ultra ata/66 which has 8.5ms seek, 7200 rpm, 2mb buffer, 22.6 gigs, and 10 heads 5 platters Price: $257.00

From what I heard so far, IBM and Western Digital are connected in some way--that is they both share IBM's "Giant Magneto-Resistive Head" technology. The head technology allows more data capacity per platter, which in turn leads to bigger drives. IBM drives appear to be slightly faster from the test results I've seen. I don't know if you'll notice any differences in speed with IBM or WD. WD drives are cheaper in price compared to IBM.

Something that I would to share with. I have tested both of these and what I have found out is that. IBM drive doesn't like to operate in the 55C temperature condition. But WD-Drive does. It depends on your perspective and the specification of drive which you want to have.
Viper222 is right about the Giant Magneto Resistance Head technology which has been share between these two companies. But one minor thing I would like to add. The head has no ability to allow more data capacity per platter. The platter by itself does, which means all the tracks on the platter constucted more narrow than before. The GMR head is more sensitive than before so that it could catch-up reading due to the narrow tracks of the platter. The revolution of the motor also play an important role in this. It's more complicated than what I Say but to make it sample and easy to understand of the hard drive that's how it worked.
Hope it helped in some way. http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/smile.gif

If you get the wd, get it at http://www.buy.com/comp/product.asp?SKU=10026817 It sells for $223.95 there. Once your order has been shipped go there again and click on customer service and go to the pricematch form. Enter http://www.pc-beyond.com/hdrive.htm as the pricematch. Beyond Pc sells that drive for $217 last I checked. You could see how much shipping is but I know for me it was higher at Beyond Pc so that's why I bought it at buy.com
