Someone wants to sell me a USR External 56k modem. I want to buy it because my Lucent Winmodem is not doing good in games, even though I get connection speeds of 45333-50666. He says the USR modem has been upgraded to v.90. I'm not planning on spending more than $30 for the thing if I do decide to buy it. Does it sound like a good deal for my needs? Any help in making this decision would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
umacias

I love my 56k USR....spent $70 for it....it downloads stuff faster than my old windmodem even though my winmodem connected at the same speed. The big difference between the two was my ping in Q2 and UT...dropped it by over 100 points....If you can pick up one for $30 I would recomend it.

USR modems are generally considered the best modems. They connect at very high speed, and drop very little data.

Give us the model number of the modem and we can probably give you better advice.

One advantage to an external modem is that it frees up an interupt; it uses the already existing COM port interupt. I don't have a lot of stuff installed in my computer but I'm already out of available interupts.

I don't know the model number, but it's a Sportster.

Hmmm..... a USR Sportster for $30, say...if it's in beautiful working condition with the rest of the accesories provided (ie. CD, cables, manual.....maybe even with the box if it was a retail unit), by all means, it's a good deal.
And if it so happens you're not really certain if you wanna get it, let me know.

Changed my mind. The modem is being sold at a higher price. $30 was just MY offer.
