Mt Rainier is a new type of packet writing. It formats on the fly and you can always open the tray. I assume that gets around the big problem with standard packet writing that your TOC is in RAM and easy to screw up with a lockup or power failure. Mt Rainier uses smaller packets.
The big deal is that it will be integrated with the OS and be able to completely replace the floppy. It isn’t really being supported yet except with some specialized aftermarket software. The next version of XP will support it and it will probably become a big deal if the MB makers eliminate the floppy connection as they have suggested.

Eliminating floppies would be great but even the newest OS' still require it for certain types of installations- namely IDE controller card drivers. During install 2k/XP will only take IDE drivers from a:... This is the only reason I've kept my floppy drive. My old ECS K7S5A would actually let me use a zip drive as a: in DOS, it was the only mobo I've seen that could do that successfully. Too bad Win2k/XP wouldn't recognize it as a: during the install...

I'm looking into buying this specific burner, and after reading the review I have a question that I hope someone can clarify for me. When I purchase the drive, how do I tell which firmware version it is?

wrathchild_67: As I understand it support for Mt Rainier will be in the OS in the next release of XP. They keep saying it will “completely” replace the floppy so I’m hoping they really mean “completely”
Geek_Apprentice It will show in device manager under the “Settings” tab.
