unreal network

today i hooked up my computer with my friends computer using coaxil. We played madden 99 and red alert, but when we tryed to play unreal or halflife network it wouldn't find any servers. My friend told me he thought that it might be because you need a dedcated server for these games. I was wondering if this was true or if there was a problem some where, and if there is a problem then what could it be.
(i have a p200mmx 64mb voodoo2)
(my friend has a p200 64mb voodoo1)
