8600GT or 9500GT

Friend of mine wants me to give him a recommendation on what vc to get for approx. $60. He currently has the ff.: P4 641, i915P mobo, 3GB PC3200, GF6800GT. Experienced the 9600gso being bottlenecked by a P4 650 so I guess he'll have to get either GF8600GT or GF9500GT. Which one of these do you think would be a good buy?

Both cards have the same number of shaders. The 9500gt is a little faster because it has it's shaders clocked higher than the 8600gt.

Thanks for the info. Found out that the GT220 is already available in shops here and the price diff is just $5 or sumthin. It certainly is a good buy. But would it be bottlenecked by the P4?

The 220gt is a 48 shaders card, so it's the equivalent of an 9600gt. With the P4, it wouldn't deliver it's outmost performance but would still perform better than the 9500gt.

The GT220 is on par with the other cards. If it's only $5 diff, then go for it.

The Phoronix is not a good test to apply to windows. In windows the 220gt will perform better than the 9500gt. The 220gt is a 48 shaders card, the same as a 9600gts which is faster than a 9500gt.

Does this mean that the best vc for P4 is 9500gt? Best in the sense that not too much and not too little. Anyways the one I saw was the DDR2 version. The DDR3 version costs around $12 more.

If your friend thought that the 9600gso was too powerfull for his computer, the 220gt being essencially the same card, than he should go for the 9500gt.
