Still New to Networking

I still cant seem to figure it out. Is it normal for network speeds to be different with direction?

I have a netgear 802.11g wirelss router, and a microsoft 802.11g pci reciever in the other pc. I also have a protable harddrive with a built-in lan connection, supposedly 10/100.

Problem is- when i transfer from the wireless pc to my main one thats hardwired to the router, i get like 3.5MB per second, nice! but then i try the other way, hard-wired pc to the wireless, and it it takes about 20sec for a 17MB file. Mind you these are almost identical pc's.

Then the real good one, the protable audio player connected by ethernet directly to the router, it is about the same speed as the usb1.1 connection it has, to and from the pc

help....

ok i feel a little dumb, after using the sticky above i found a program that tells me my network speed activity. Works well, but why is the router to wireless pci twice as fast as wireless pci to router? (1.17MB/sec vs 500kb/sec)

and why is my little digital storage device (terapin mine) only transfering at 13kb/sec!

Make sure duplex is the same on both ends - either set or auto.

Let me tell you, this is a PITA to find, but look at the online manual, and somewhere in there is this:

Quote:
Before connecting the first time, you must enter the details for each Local Area Network (LAN) in the mine control panel LAN Information window.

Click the LAN Info tab to display the Local Area Network Window.

Local Area Network
LAN Information...
Choose a name for your LAN. This is the name that mine will display when you are selecting a LAN, so choose a descriptive name. For example, the names Head Office LAN and R&D Office LAN will be understandable in the future whereas LAN1 and LAN2 may be confusing.

Click New. A new window will pop up. Enter the name you choose in the LAN Name box. Click OK

Local Area Network
LAN Information...
You now need to fill in the details for your LAN information.
mine control panel can import network information from your PC so you do not have to enter the LAN setting details manually.

Click Get System Parameters. A new confirmation window will pop up. If you want to import network information from your PC, click Yes.

Local Area Network
LAN Information...
You can also enter the LAN information manually.
Enter your user name and password in the labeled boxes.

Enter the domain name and the showed name in the labeled boxes. If you are using DNS or other gateways, enter the details in the labeled boxes. Click on More Gateways if you want to add other gateway settings.

If you want to change the proxy settings, check the Proxy Setting box and click Setting

yada yada yada

When you are happy that you have entered the settings for your LAN correctly, click Apply Changes. A confirmation window will pop up. Click Yes. mine control panel will add this LAN to the other LAN networks listed on the left of the screen.

yada yada yada - sharing, permissions, accounts, etc.
All of that to finally find this in the spec sheet:

10 Mbps Ethernet 1

Well there ya go. Set the other end of your connection to 10 Mbps half duplex and transfer should be good. Note, if you try plugging this into a SOHO router/switch, it might be ok, since the autonegotiate should negotiate to 10 half duplex by default - but if you have any troubles, immediately suspect the autonegotiation.

HTH

well, it seemed like a good idea, i cant believe i missed that in the manual about its speed, ive read that damn thing a hundred times, i have the origional paper one since i bought this new ($120 off ebay )

Anyways, im still running about 500k/sec both ways. I can only set force negotiation on my NF7's motherboard lan port, it doesnt seem like you can set the port speed on my netgear WGR614 router.

I thought it seemed slow before, but now that i know that it is running HALF as fast as my WIRELESS connection it seems to just be buggin the hell out of me.

Well, you could invest a few hundred $$ and get a managed switch off Ebay - like a Baystack 450 or an old Cisco Catalyst. Then you could manage all your ports speed and duplex no problem.
