Just bought an Abit AN8-SLI mobo from newegg. Got the system up and going just fine, but my LAN connector does not allow me to connect to the internet. It recognizes it when I plug in my ethernet cable, but not data is transferred. I have a PCI lan card and it works just fine, but I think it's annoying to take up a PCI slot when the onboard LAN is supposed to be used for this purpose.
I did NOT install the Nvida drivers that came with my mobo. I DID install the latest drivers from the nvida website. It did not help. I flashed the bois of course, so that problem is taken care of. I went into the bios and turned off the LAN settings, and I tried turning them back on too. Neither of these issues helped. I fairly certain it's a driver issue at play here. I don't think the board is faulty, so I'm gonna try to work it out. If things continue, I will clear the CMOS and uninstall some things. Any got any ideas on what I should do next?
win xp sp2
amd 4200 x2
abit AN8-SLI
seagate 250 3gps hdd
Antec Sonata II tower w/450 watt psu
evga 7600GT video card
1 gig ddr500 Gskill RAM
Athlon64 X2 4200+ | Thermalright XP-120 | ASUS A8R32-MVP | WD 250GB SATA2 hard drive w/ 16MB cache | 2x1GB Corsair XMS PC-3200 (2-3-3-3-6) | HIS Radeon x800XL w/ Zalman VF700Cu LED | ATI TV Wonder Elite | Antec P-160 case with window | Antec 550w True Power | Sony DVD recorder and Combo drive
you still need to install the lan drivers for i believe it's marvell. when your referring to the nvidia driver's you downloaded your not refering to the video driver's are you? I had the lan work fine on that same exact board but you need to put the cd that came with the board in and install the lan driver's. I got active armor working just fine i recomend the windows firewall with the active armor antihacking features.

Thanks for the responses. I'm not sure what Active Armor is. But I can assure you there is nothing on my mobo disk that pertains to this.
Nope, I'm talking about the chipset drivers. It's an nforce4 mobo, therefore the LAN drivers to the motherboard are nvidia. I used the video card drivers for my 7600GT and they work fine. Though I uninstalled them too today, just to see what would happen.
In my experience, it's NEVER a good idea to install drivers that come with a motherboard unless absolutely necessary. Their drivers are never the latest addition and you're always better off getting the newest drivers from the web. I've found that countless issues can be resolved by avoiding this. I compared the drivers on my mobo disk to the newer chipset drivers on nvidia's website and they're pretty much the same. Anyway... still having the same issues.
Funny thing is, when I plug the cable into the LAN port, it detects it. And when I unplug it, it detects that it's been disconnected. No data transfers though, which is odd. Usually when a device is detected by windows it works.

Ok, that is what you were talking about. I got it. Yeah, I looked through that. I noticed a few things that seemed funny to me about that. For one, when I double click on the LAN icon and click on the details tab I find that I'm not getting the full range of IP addresses that show up on the same tab when I used my PCI LAN card (my PCI LAN card works just fine, so this is what I'll be using until I get this problem resolved). For one, I'm not getting an IP for the subnet mask or even a default gateway. It seems strange that many of these are not filled in for me. I've tried setting some of them up manually, but I'll have to go and look that that again maybe. Anyway... about Link speed/Duplex - yeah, I will have to look at that when I got home from work. I looked through it and compared it to the settings of what my connection reads when I've got my PCI LAN card plugged it, and they are pretty much the same. I would not know what to change it to anyway. Are the settings you've got filled in above the ones I should use?
Thanks for your posts and for your help solving this for me.

10mbps full duplex or half duplex should work I think.. But its better try all connections one by one. Their should only be about 4-6 connection types..
Auto negotiation
10mbps half Duplex
10mbps full Duplex
100mbps half Duplex
100mbps full Duplex
and if its a Gigabit Ethernet you will have,
1000mbps half Duplex and
1000mbps full Duplex aswell.
and try to fill those missing subnet masks and default gateway IP etc..
