Idiot running his Computer inside a closed cupboard with Zero Airflow !!!

LOL, how's this for a cooling solution. I built this computer for a guy about six months ago and at the time I installed it I explained to the guy about the importance of airflow in a modern computer. I specifically told him how he should be careful not to block the air inlets at the front/front-bottom of the case, for example by placing it on deep shag-pile carpet etc.

Well a few weeks ago in a spell of hot weather I get a call from this guy about his computer crashing and BSOD'ing a bit so I go over to take a look.

Holy Crap !!!! As soon as I looked at his new custom built solid timber "computer desk" and saw no computer in sight I new somthing was seriously wrong.

So where's the computer I said ? The guy points to this fully enclosed cupboard, only a wee bit bigger than the computer tower itself, with a pop-open door on the front.

****, I said, what about the airflow I told you about? No probems he says, I cut a big hole in the back.

So I took a look inside and this thing was dam 1" thick solid timber, the front and back were fully closed in (the front having a door though). And this "big" hole he had cut in the otherwise fully enclosed back was only a pissy little 2 1/2" thing, only just large enough for him to get his cables in an out.

So this poor computer had basically been running like this for some time. Just to show the guy how wrong it was I just turned it on and ran it for about 5 minutes and then felt the case temperatue. All the hot air from the back was just recirculating all around the outside of the case and it was as hot as hell already.

I dont know, you just cant tell some people. Anyway I thought some here might get a laugh out of this true story.

i've had one guy try to 'upgrade' his cyrix pr333 motherboard by sticking the chip in a socket 'A' board, he punched an 'extra hole' in the socket and it fit neatly, wonder of wonders neither worked again

By the way, what does BTW stand for?

It is better to be tried by 12, than carried by 6.

LOL
A 2 1/2" hole for the air to get in and out of that timber computer coffin. Oh dear.

In the same vein as Justins Cyrix story there is one that I have read before about someone modding their PC133 ram to fit ir into a DDR slot
They just modded it by making sure there were notches in the right place on the stick.

I guess even email machines can't take that much of a beating.

A while back, my mom told me the internet box I made for here was crashing all the time. The next time I was home I had a look. In the BIOS I saw that the K62 500 was running upwards of 50C--but the golden orb was spinning loyally at 4500rpm. So I pop open the case only find that the poor orb is encrusted in dust! The fan was doing next to nothing since no air was getting pushed past the fins. After a good cleaning the temps dropped to a respectable 39C.
