Windows cannot find autorun.exe

Hey guys,

Strange little problem here. When I insert the win98 cd, and then eject it, the icon for my dvd drive stays the same (with the 98 logo, as if the 98 cd was still in there). When I insert a new cd, and double click to open it, it gives me a thing saying:

Windows cannot find AUTORUN.EXE.

This program is needed for opening files of type "File."

Type in the executable file to be used instead:

And there is a text box and a browse button. The only way I can look at what is on the cd is by either right clicking and selecting open or restarting with no cd in the drive and then inserting the new cd. Is there a fix for this? Or anything I can do? Thanks for any replies in advance!

Jay

It sounds like your computer is still trying to open a file on the original CD. It may be a problem with that particular CD. The computer is still trying to read it when you eject the cd.
Check the condition of the cd and make sure it isnt marked or scratched.

Try refreshing My computer window (F5) after ejecting a CD. Insert the new CD, double click on it and see if it runs.

Just right click on the CD and select open. It won't try to autorun the CD that way. I think it's a win9x bug, as I've had the same problem with ME. Sometimes just right clicking the cd-rom and selecting "Eject" will get rid of that old CD properties. That way windows knows its fly is open.

I think that "auto insert notification" is what you're looking for. It can be enabled in system properties - hardware - cdrom. (control panel)

With that enabled all cd changes will show up instantly (like the F5 thingy, above)
